Qualities of the Best Jewellers in the UK
Exceptional Craftsmanship and Materials
The best jewellers are artisans who put artistry and quality first. Handmade jewellery carries a personal touch that mass-produced pieces cannot replicate and alongside that, handmade jewellery doesn’t have ‘factory defects’. At Kerensa Jewellery, every item is handcrafted in Cornwall using solid silver and gold, ensuring your jewellery is both beautiful and made to last. I am a total perfectionist, so when I am creating jewellery for my customers, I make sure the piece you receive is absolutely picture perfect alongside it’s presentation within its gift box.
Trust, Transparency, and Hallmarks
When choosing a jeweller, authenticity is essential. The UK’s Assay Office hallmark precious metals as a guarantee of purity and quality. Kerensa Jewellery proudly carries these hallmarks, including rare Millennium hallmarks on select designs, so you know your jewellery is genuine.
Alongside these marks showing quality and guarantee of quality, they are also very fascinating. Firstly, a hallmark will show who made the piece of jewellery through the makers mark (mine is P.A, formally J.P.A). Then there is a stamp that shows what precious metal it is alongside the precious metal content in parts per thousand. Since most of my jewellery is made of solid sterling silver, 925 will be the stamp displayed in my jewellery. The leopard seen on all of my hallmarks is the symbol of where it was stamped, the leopard symbolises the London Assay Office, while other location marks include Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh. The final stamp you will see on a piece of my jewellery is a single letter. This letter represents the year the piece of metal was stamped, for example, the year 2024 was Z, while this year, 2025 is A.
Next time you see a piece of jewellery that has a hallmark, have a deeper look, there is so much to learn about a piece through its hallmarks. Each piece will have its own story and history, no matter how old it is.
Professional Accreditation and Recognition
Membership of respected trade bodies is another hallmark (pun intended) of the best jewellers in the UK. The silversmith behind Kerensa Jewellery, Piere, is a member of both the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) and the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths (IPG). These memberships reflect skill and professionalism as well as my commitment to the highest standards in jewellery-making.
Sustainability and Ethics
Today, many people are seeking jewellery with a conscience. The best jewellers avoid waste and prioritise sustainability. At Kerensa Jewellery, every piece is handmade to order, supporting sustainable practices and ensuring your jewellery is crafted with care. Where possible I purchase and use recycled silver, and all the gold I use is recycled.
